Angora goats are friendly, inquisitive animals, originating in the Ankara region of Turkey from where their name originated. They have been kept for their fine, lustrous fleece since pre-biblical times.
Mohair is a fine, ringlet fibre, which has lustre, softness and is hard-wearing, with fire retardant properties. It readily dyes, creating beautiful vibrant colours.
Frances and Ian Mason have kept Angora goats since 1989 and currently keep a flock of around 40 on their smallholding in the New Forest. Goats are sometimes for sale and training days on angora goat management are held during the year.
The prize winning Linden flock live out most of the year and kid in the spring. They are shorn twice a year and their fleeces used to create the range of New Forest Mohair, yarns, fibres, fleece, scarves and throws.
